Why People Love Internet Couples

People become so invested in internet relationships that they feel pain when they breakup. Why would anyone want to spend their time virtually third wheeling? The psychologic obsession to brand and follow an online couple is real. This article will explore why people love internet couples.

Although I do not watch couples or family channels, I still love to be in the loop of someone else's relationship. (David and Liza! But now do I ship David and Natalie? No, Diza forver!) Sometimes I click on couples challenges since that is an easier commitment than a channel subscription. 

But people truly dedicate themselves to couples channels, so I dug deeper into this fascination of celebrity relationships.

What's the Deal with Couples Channels?

Self-projecting - People chase online relationships for the feel-good factor. If you're a straight woman, you may deep down pretend to be the girlfriend in that relationship. When the guy speaks to the camera about planning a romantic date, the woman viewer feels a part of the romance. 

Now, this does not always indicate that you are in a bad relationship or lonely. The couple does such a great job of including you that as a social creature you genuinely feel tied into their love fest. But this obsession can still indicate that you have unhappiness in your life. Remember, many couples channels do not share their fights. You always (or mostly) see their relationship highlight reel.

Nosy - Relationships are usually private affairs. Even when TMZ reports relationship turmoils, the tabloids are the ones publicly revealing this information. Everybody, even the happiest of individuals, become curious. That is why gossip magazines/websites have been around for decades. The fame society creates for these people comes with sense of ownership: They belong to us! 

We place a couple on a pedestal, deem them #CouplesGoals, and worship the fantasy. Or if we favor one person in the relationship over the other, we become defensive and try to medal. In the YouTube world, people love to leave mean comments about Trisha Paytas on Jason Nash's channel as if he needs the advice or wants to read those comments. On a larger scale, any lover of Justin Bieber who was not Selena Gomez received death threats.
